Psychoanalysis is central for Critical Theory. But the Freudian anthropology represents a challenge for a critical theory of society. The conference addresses the question of what conception of emancipation, or progress in a forward-looking sense, is possible if we accept the postulate of the death drive. 

Amy Allen is Liberal Arts Professor of Philosophy and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Department Head at The Pennsylvania State University. Her areas of research include the Critical Social Theory (especially Frankfurt School), the Feminist Theory, the Social and Political Theory.

She has published The Power of Feminist Theory: Domination, Resistance, Solidarity (1999), “Emancipation without Utopia:  Subjection, Modernity, and the Normative Claims of Feminist Critical Theory,” Hypatia 30: 3 (Summer 2015), The End of Progress:  Decolonizing the Normative Foundations of Critical Theory (Columbia University Press, 2016); Critical Theory between Klein and Lacan: A Dialogue, co-authored with Mari Ruti (Bloomsbury, 2019).
